Aquatics

At the Y, we are able to have signicant impact on others.  We get to be around, influence, and be influenced by some really great people.  This Spring, one of our lifeguards was approached to participate in a video project sponsored by The YMCA of the USA.  This is Ashlee's story.

Ashlee's Story

Benjamin Franklin once said, “A person is not truly educated unless they know how to swim.” For over 150 years, YMCAs nationwide have been teaching individuals how to swim and how to safely enjoy pools and other recreational waters. YMCAs have been teaching how swimming and aquatic exercise can improve health, and also how lives can be saved. Learning to swim means learning skills that you can enjoy all throughout life - long after you've had to give up other sports and activities.

Whether it's swimming for fitness or competition; whether you're old or young; whether playing in the water or learning to save lives - our YMCAs have something for you.

Active Adults

Hattiesburg    petal

We know that active adults are seeking more than physical benefits when they come to the Y. They also want a sense of community and have a desire to strengthen social ties. In response to this need, the YMCA has developed several activities to encourage and motivate active adults to take action and get involved.

YMCA programs for active adults strengthen the whole person. Socializing and volunteering have been shown to have positive effects on the health of older adults, and exercise has proven to promote mental agility, in addition to longevity and good health.

With that in mind, we have programs for active adults designed to enrich and renew spirit, mind and body. Try water exercise or yoga and stretching classes. Make new friends at informative health seminars and round table discussions, play board games, or enjoy arts and crafts. In addition, you can join the sewing and knitting group. There are also monthly luncheons and day trips. Spirit and mind are not healthy if the body is not fit and the body is not healthy without mental and spiritual fitness.
